Short Bio

Chara Kokkiou is a Medical Ethics Professor of Practice at Tulane University, Department of Philosophy. Her academic interests lie in ancient philosophy and applied ethics, with a particular emphasis on emotions (compassion). Prior to receiving her second PhD in Philosophy from Tulane University (2022), she completed he first PhD in Classics at the University of Crete in Greece (2015), her MA in Greek & Latin at University College London (2008), and her BA in Greek Philology from the University of Athens, Greece (2006). Her recent dissertation, Compassion in Aristotle and Rousseau (Tulane University, 2022), raises questions about the meaning and relevance of compassion in moral and political philosophy. Her first book on Plato focused partially on various aspects of complex emotional phenomena—love, madness, and shame. Part of her recently published edited volume at Routledge, Beauty and Monstrosity in Art and Culture, is also treating emotional responses tied to positive and negative lived experiences and their impact on the individual and the society. Her research expands on the applications of compassion. She is currently working on a monograph focused on compassion, katharsis, and theories of emotions and preparing a Handbook of Compassion along with Professor Chad Van Schoelandt.
